If you must pick a colour or two, choose the colours which best represent its personality.

time is all it takes...and practice of course...the way I learned was to copy others, not exactly but take there concept and slowly put my concepts into it... then eventually I could do my own without needing a reference,

Not usually....I just use my own techniques...unless "how to draw [whatever-it-is]" books count as copying other artists techniques :D
